Meet a Local in Myanmar

Personal Encounters while travelling
Our Meet-a-Local activitites are especially recommended. Visit local people to share a cup of tea or even cook a meal together. You visit people in their private homes, see how they live, share their traditions, and exchange information and ideas. Or just have fun together! Eating and cooking together is one thing, but there's even more!

Take a walk through the city and see it through the eyes of a local, get to places you thought you never could visit, meet people, and smell and taste the local food during one of our street food tours.

All these meet-a-local activities are meant to give you a once-in a-lifetime experience!

Some meet-a-local activities might already be included in the tours. Missing something? You can request our local partner for more information!

Burma meet a local near Inle Lake - cook and have lunch with a local family

You leave in the morning 11:00 am to meet Zuzu to cook together at her grand fathers home! Together you visit a local market to buy ingredients first.
You will learn which ingredients are needed to make a traditional Shan meal. You will then learn how a Shan meal is prepared and finally eat lunch together.

The Shan people do not cook with very much oil and "Nganpyar yay” fish sauce, unlike the Myanmar people. They use two kinds of soy sauces: Kya and Kyanyo. They also use more vegetables. The meat dishes are mainly beef, chicken and pork. You can try “Shan Noodles,” a typical, delicious food from Shan State. The preparation is quite simple:  boiled noodles are mixed with chicken curry, tomato paste, peanuts and spring onions. They are usually serve with pickled vegetables and plain soup.    Enjoy and have fun together with wonderful Zuzu!
BURMA MEET A LOCAL - BREAKFAST LIKE A LOCAL IN BAGAN / NYANGSHWE

You leave your hotel at 08:00 for a local breakfast at the market with Zuzu or her sister! Experience how the Myanmar people have breakfast with sweet tea and a donut-like delicacy at a local teashop or cafe. You usually eat on a stool at the side of the counter. Teashops are an important and integral part of life in Myanmar. Many Myanmar people are in the habit of sitting at a teasop to sip a cup of tea or coffee. Teashops serve as social centers or rendezvous points where friends meet each other, business is done, and news is exchanged. The benefit of enjoying a Myanmar breakfast at a tea shop is threefold: you can get a glimpse of Myanmar tea culture, you can try typical Myanmar snacks, and you can observe the lively atmosphere. Try this unique experience! After breakfast you can walk with your guide through the town and then you will be brought back to your hotel.
BURMA MEET A LOCAL! - DISCOVER LOCAL SPECIALTIES IN YANGON!

This is a unique experience! You are picked up in the afternoon by your local English-speaking guide. Together you drive to Chinatown or Sanchaung. Here you will sample local specialties from Yangon and experience how they are prepared and eaten. You walk through various stalls, tasting the spicy, savory, and sweet snacks! You will definitely try the local specialty, "Mont Hingar," rice noodles with fish gravy! The main ingredient is freshwater fish with onions, garlic, lemon grass, fish sauce, and other things. When it is served it’s also garnished with a sprinkle of coriander leaves, chilli powder, and some fresh crisps. The smell is enough to make your mouth water. This dish is the favourite of all Myanmar. You can follow it up with "Mont Lin Mayar,” a snack consisting of two small pieces of glutinous rice with syrup and fruit chunks or beans cooked in sugar. Of course you can also taste lots of other snacks!
BURMA MEET A LOCAL! - DISCOVER LOCAL SPECIALTIES MANDALAY!

Together with a local English-speaking guide you will discover the traditional cuisine of Myanmar! You can taste the typical traditional delicacy of Mandalay, "Mont Tee.” It is made of thick rice noodles mixed with special chicken curry. You can also try “Htoe Mont,” glutinous rice cake with raisins. You will then visit the night market of Mandalay. Here you will find women selling their products on the muddy edge of the road. Here you'll find pomelos, oranges, limes, lemons, wonderful wild mushrooms, bananas, onions, garlic, asparagus, cauliflower and more! The market is the place to buy local street food. You experience it all here! Local sweet sticky cakes, excellent pork, Tpfu Nwe, Shan Noodles, Marlahin and much more!
BURMA MEET A LOCAL! - VISITING THE MARKET KYIMYINDAING

Early in the morning (4:00 am!) you drive from Yangon to Kyimyindaing to visit the fish market. This is truly a local market and unknown to tourists. The fishing boats deliver the fish to begin the market between 2: 00 and 3:00 am. The fish are dumped onto a concrete floor and are sorted for export and domestic use. Freshwater fish come at the same time by trucks. This is the perfect excursion if you are looking for the authentic Myanmar! Enjoy exploring the market and meeting the friendly locals. Be prepared, however, that it is somewhat dirty and muddy and full of noises-chattering, yelling and running-that can be a bit abrasive. However, what a unique experience!  After the market you can go drink a cup of tea in a local tea house. Tea houses in Burma are the place to socialize, make appointments, and meet!
